World Hypertension Day raises awareness of the causes, symptoms, and treatment of
hypertension. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, affects the arteries and strains
the heart. Around 1.28 billion adults worldwide have hypertension, with the majority
in low- and middle-income countries. Risk factors include age, genetics, obesity,
inactivity, high-salt diet, and excessive alcohol consumption. Preventive measures
involve lifestyle changes: eating more fruits and vegetables, being physically active,
managing weight, taking prescribed medication, and attending healthcare appointments.
Avoiding excessive salt, saturated fats, tobacco, and alcohol is essential.
World Hypertension Day encourages education, prevention, detection, and control
of hypertension.
